Overseas Visitor Health Cover

OVHC stands for Overseas Visitor Health Cover.
It is a type of health insurance specifically designed for people visiting Australia on a temporary visa (such as a visitor visa, working holiday visa, temporary work visa, or bridging visa). It helps cover the cost of medical treatment and hospital care while you’re in Australia.
Key Features of OVHC:
- Covers doctor visits (GPs) and hospital treatment (depending on the policy).
- Emergency ambulance services are usually included.
- Some policies include prescription medicines and limited extras, like dental or physiotherapy.
- It ensures visitors are not left with high medical bills in case of illness or injury.
- Some temporary visa holders (like 482, 407 or 485) are required by the Department of Home Affairs to have OVHC as a visa condition.
Who Needs OVHC?
- Temporary visa holders who do not qualify for Medicare (Australia’s public health system).
